The afternoon high in West U is expected to again reach 102 under clear skies and the National Weather Service has extended the heat advisory through the rest of the work week.
Today will be the 17th day in a row for temperatures to reach or exceed 100 degrees as the hottest – and driest – year on record continues with little relief in the forecast.
Heat index values are expected to top out between 105 and 110 every afternoon between noon and 6 p.m. As a result, the heat advisory will remain in effect at least through 7 p.m. Friday.
Because of the ongoing drought, 249 of Texas’ 254 counties currently have outdoor burn bans in effect. Only Cameron, Jefferson, Orange, Willacy and Zapata counties are not under a burn ban.
Most Texas counties – including Harris – have exceeded 700 on the Keetch-Byram Drought Index. A number higher than 700 places a county in the most extreme drought category on the index.
While a brief afternoon shower is possible, rain chances are less than 10 percent.
