Bagel Shop Bakery — which has operated a Hillcroft Avenue location in southwest Houston for 45 years — is adding a location in Bellaire and aiming for an opening within days in the second phase of a new complex that will eventually include an adjacent New York Deli & Coffee Shop.
The opening couldn’t come at a better time for local bagel lovers, as the closest outpost of Einstein Bros. Bagels — in Weslayan Plaza north of West University — has apparently closed for good. A manager at the Kirby/Bissonnet location said Monday that location will remain open.
The new bakery, at 5422 Bellaire Blvd. at Chimney Rock Road, across from the Bellaire Triangle, will feature bagels, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and specialties such as whitefish and tuna salads, all freshly prepared onsite. The 2,700-square-foot facility will offer takeout and patio seating, with limited dine-in seating planned for when public safety concerns allow, and will be Houston Kashruth (HKA)- and Mehadrin Kashrus of Texas (MKT)-certified.
That is a particular source of pride to Michael Saghian, manager of the bakery, partner in the deli/coffee shop and owner Houston Catering Concepts, which moved its business into the new complex in October. Saghian’s family owns Bellaire’s Brisket Bar-B-Q, and he became co-owner of the bagel-coffee shop-deli business last year.
“Our team has heard for years that members of the Houston Jewish community who, in addition to the strict kosher standards of the HKA require the MKT Kashruth standards, have wanted more dining options and we are proud to be able to serve them in Bellaire,” Saghian said. “We are ecstatic to watch our Bagel Shop Bakery family continue to grow, not only with our Bellaire neighbors but within the Houston Jewish community, as well.”
The New York Deli & Coffee Shop, which opened in its Hillcroft location in 1981, is currently under construction and is expected to open in Bellaire in 2021 for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
