Baseball History at Historic Society

December 3, 2014 by Bellaire Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

Baseball got to the South earlier than most people realize. The first games in the Houston area were played before the Civil War, according to author and historian Mike Vance.
Vance is Executive Director of Houston Arts and Media and author of the newly released “Houston Baseball: The Early Years 1861-1961.
At the Bellaire Historical Society’s next meeting, Thursday, December 11, Vance will show rare photos and describe players and teams that most fans never even knew existed. Non-fans will enjoy the general Houston history and specifics about places that put the early baseball in context.
The meeting starts promptly at 7 p.m. in the L.I.F.E. (Seniors) Activities Room at the Bellaire Civic Center, 7008 South Rice near Linden. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting and refreshments are open to the public and free.
