The Bellaire Chess Club tested their strategies against some of the highest rated young chess players in the nation at the U.S. Chess Federation 2008 National Scholastic K-12 Grade Championship in Florida last weekend and came home with two team championships.
The Bellaire Eleventh Grade team finished in first place and the Tenth Grade team tied for first place with a team from Gilbert, Arizona. More than 1,230 players participated in the tournament. Juniors William Ong, George Fan and sophomore Matthew Michaelides placed in the top five in the nation within their grade level. The eleventh grade Championship team included Ong, Fan and Mengwei Ni. Along with Michaelides, the tenth grade Championship team included Jeff Feng and Janak Sheth. The other Bellaire participants were Lokin Casturi, Aaron Wernick, Scott Delhommer, Suragh Mallela and Joe Fang. The team is sponsored by science teacher Michael Mavronicles.
