Bellaire Chess Team Places Sixth In Nation

The Bellaire High School Chess team placed 6th in the nation at the US Chess Federation Supernationals held at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee on April 3 – 5. The Bellaire team included juniors William Ong and George Fan, and sophomores Jeff Feng and Matthew Michaelides.

Michaelides won the 26th place trophy in the Championship Division, which includes players rated above 1600. No other Texas teams or players placed higher in the Championship Division. In the Under 1600 Division, the team of sophomores Douglas Jin, Lokin Casturi and Janak Sheth came in 30th place in the nation, with Sheth winning 10th place in the nation in his division.

The Supernationals were attended by more than 5,000 young players from around the nation. Former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov made an appearance at the event, and Women’s World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk attended, giving lectures and signing autographs.
