Bellaire City Offices Remain Open For Presidents Day, Post Offices Closed

February 21, 2011 by Bellaire Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

Bellaire city offices will remain open today for the Presidents Day holiday.

City hall, public works, parks and recreation and other administrative offices will be operating as usual.

A number of federal government offices will be closed, as well as many financial institutions.

All area post offices are also closed and there will be no mail delivery.

Since some institutions observe Presidents Day and others do not, residents having questions about closings are urged to call ahead.

While the holiday is commonly called Presidents Day, the federal Uniform Monday Holiday Act still officially designates the observance as “Washington’s Birthday.”

When the federal holiday law took effect in 1971, it shifted the traditional Washington’s Birthday observance from Feb. 22 – Washington’s actual birthday – to the third Monday in February. While the act initially intended to officially change the name to Presidents Day to honor both Washington and Abraham Lincoln, the portion of the bill that would have changed the name failed in committee and the official name “Washington’s Birthday” was retained.

Since the 1980s, the term Presidents Day has been commonly used to refer to the holiday.
