Demonstrating a deep understanding of the economy and the financial markets, the Bellaire Economics Challenge team won the State Championship in Austin on April 14.
Another Bellaire team won 2nd place in the state. This is the 7th time Bellaire has had a team qualify for the National Finals of the Economics Challenge. With two divisions, one for AP students and one for nonAP students, the group has had a state championship in at least one division every year. No other school in Texas has ever qualified for the national finals even once, though many have tried.
The state champions are: Annirudh Prasad, George Fan, Jimmy Moon, and Leonardo Setyanto. Economics teacher Mike Clark is the team sponsor.
The Bellaire state champion team aced the National Semifinal exam on April 26, and is one of only six top scoring teams from around the country who will advance and travel to New York City, where they will compete for the National Championship title on May 22 to 24. Their challengers will be teams from Indiana, Alabama, California, Maryland and Hawaii.
The Economics Challenge competitions are sponsored by the Council for Economic Education as a state, regional and national competition for high school students designed to increase their understanding of, and interest in, economics and finance. Students compete in teams for a chance to win prizes and a trip to New York City to compete in the national finals.
Each member of the winning team and their teacher will receive a $1,500 cash prize, as well as medals and a championship trophy. The runner-up team will also receive a cash prize and medals.
The President of the Texas council will be coming to the school in early May to present the group with their checks for winning state.
Bellaire has won nine state championships in the economics challenge and have had one team place fourth in the nation, four teams place third in the nation and one team place second in the nation.
