The Bellaire City Council has chosen a search firm to assist in hiring a new city manager.
After interviewing three professional executive search firms, the council has chosen Strategic Government Resources to find the city’s new city manager. The council interviewed SGR, Slavin Management Consultants and Chris Hartung Consulting.
Bellaire City Manager Bernie Satterwhite is retiring in March 2014.
The council approved a motion for the mayor to negotiate a contract with SGR; Councilman Roman Reed and Councilman Pat McLaughlan were opposed. Both councilmen said they supported hiring Chris Hartung Consulting.
Councilman Corbett Parker made the motion to negotiate with SGR.
“The choice is simple,” he said. “Do we want a Cadillac or do we want something else? Let’s do this right.”
Parker said it was worth paying $2,000 – $3,000 more for SGR. According to SGR’s proposal, the proposed cost of their professional services is $17,500 with a not-to-exceed cost of $24,000.
The other two search firms listed their proposed costs in the $14,000 range, according to their proposals.
“I would like to go with a blue chip search firm,” Parker said. “We’re a first class city. If we’re going to pay for a Cadillac let’s get a Cadillac.”
Councilman Andrew Friedberg, who seconded Parker’s motion, said that while he was impressed with both Chris Hartung Consulting and SGR, he preferred to go with SGR.
Mayor Phil Nauert said he preferred a larger search firm to handle their search.
