Bellaire has a four-step drought contingency plan and water conservation and on Thursday, it effectively activated Stage 1 of the plan — Annual Drought and Conservation Awareness Campaign.
The move was made as a result of warmer and drier weather which will cause water usage to increase.
The city’s surface water comes from man-made lakes, which are also used by other cities that will be affected by the weather. As a result, lake levels may decrease due to the heavy demand. Dry conditions can be dangerous as in increased the chances of wildfire.
Bellaire gives the following tips to conserve water.
- Do not water lawns daily.
- Lawns typically only need about one (1) inch of water per week. (This encourages the growth of deeper roots.)
- Do not overwater.
- Do not allow water to run off into the street.
- Change timers on sprinklers to water after midnight.
- Check your swimming pool to make sure it is not overfilling.
- Check for and repair detectible water leaks as soon as possible.
- Keep showers under five minutes.
- Turn water off while brushing teeth.
- Wash only full loads of dishes or clothing.
- Replace older-model shower heads and faucets.
- Limit washing vehicles.
