Bellaire High School student Tobi Oyedeji died in a car accident Sunday on his way home from an after prom event.

Oyedeji, a senior and star basketball player at BHS, was on his way home from an after prom lock-in at Dave and Buster’s when his vehicle crossed over into oncoming traffic at 6:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Oyedeji’s silver Toyota Avalon crossed over the median into northbound traffic in the 14100 block of S. Main and crashed head-on into a green Jeep Patriot, killing the driver of the other vehicle. He also struck a Honda civic, but the driver had minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.

Oyedeji was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was treated but died from his injuries, said Houston Police Department Spokesperson Kese Smith.

This incident is under investigation by HPD vehicular crimes division. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor, Smith said.

Oyedeji had a scholarship to Texas A&M to play basketball in the fall.

Bellaire High School head basketball coach Bruce Glover is going to retire Oyedeji’s jersey, said HISD Media Relations Manager Norm Uhl.

Extra personnel, psychologists and counselors will be available for grieving students at BHS today.
