Bellaire issues boil-water notice after Houston breach

The city of Bellaire issued a boil-water notice for all customers Sunday night “out of an abundance of caution” after a water-pressure issue at the major Houston purification plant — from which the city gets more than half its supply — compromised safety.

Bellaire’s supply comes through the East Water Purification Plant at 2342 Federal Road, which reportedly dropped below the state’s required minimum of 20 psi during a power outage at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Documentation from Bellaire shows that 53 percent of its water supply comes from that plant, with the other 47 percent groundwater pumped from the Evangeline Aquifer.

”The city of Bellaire is closely testing and monitoring both the water pressure and water quality across the city throughout the day. In addition, once we receive further notice from the city of Houston we shall provide more details,” read the statement from Cheryl Bright, community relations manager.

HISD has announced that all schools and facilities will be closed Monday because of the water issue, which Houston said is expected to continue into Tuesday. Gov. Greg Abbott reportedly has offered the state’s services to expedite testing on the water supply.
