Each year, HISD recognizes the many students who are finalists in the National Achievement Scholarship, National Hispanic Recognition, and National Merit Scholarship programs.
This year, that ceremony took place at the Westin Oaks hotel on May 18, and 97 students were honored, 15 percent more than in 2009.
The National Achievement Scholarship Program was created in 1964 to assist outstanding African-American students. The National Hispanic Recognition Program, established in 1994, identifies academically outstanding students of Hispanic descent. National Merit Scholarship Program finalists are selected from students who score the highest in each state on the PSAT/NMSQT.
