Bellaire mayor issues disaster declaration, city activates emergency ops as Harvey approaches

Bellaire Mayor Andrew Friedberg issued a disaster declaration early Friday and the city activated its Emergency Operations Center in anticipation of Hurricane Harvey, which is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 storm overnight and stall over the Houston area throughout the weekend.
“Essential personnel have made arrangements to remain in Bellaire through the weekend for rapid response when called upon,” Friedberg wrote in a message to residents, citing police and fire first responders, Public Works and administrative staff. “Be assured we are in good hands.”
The city is handling regular solid waste pickup today, but Friedberg cautioned against putting out trash again until further notice, and encouraged residents to move vehicles from the streets to higher ground.
“Be safe, be patient, and let’s help one another as neighbors in weathering this storm,” he wrote.
Earlier the city had announced that the Aquatics Center and Recreation Center would close at 5 p.m. Friday and not reopen over the weekend. The library’s Friday operations continue as normal, but it will be closed Saturday.

ABC-13’s AccuWeather look at Harvey as of 10:25 a.m. Friday.
