Bellaire Police Offering Free Defense Classes For Women

January 22, 2009 by Bellaire Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The Bellaire Police Department will hold free self-defense classes for women in February. The program, called the Rape Aggression Defense System, will take place from 8 a.m.-noon Feb. 9 though Feb. 12.

R.A.D. is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The system is a women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.  R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program.  The main objective of R.A.D. is to develop and enhance the options of self defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked.

The starting age for women who are interested in taking the class is 14 years old with a parent or guardian who also attends the class. Participants must be 18 years old to take the class without a parent or guardian.  Officer Tracie Mathews with the Bellaire Police Department will instruct the class.

Contact Officer Tim Quimby to register for the class at 713-662-8103 or e-mail tquimby@bellairepolice.com.
