Bellaire High School Senior Vicky Usova was named Russian Language Scholar Laureate by the American Council of Teachers of Russian. Usova was one of 56 students across the country to be named Scholar Laureate.
Usova’s parents emigrated from Belarus to Houston when she was two years old. She speaks Russian at home with her parents and says she was eager to study the language formally when she came to Bellaire High School, a magnet school for languages.
Russian teacher Lisa McLendon recommended Usova for the award.
“Vicky is a student who inspires her classmates and her teachers,” said McLendon. “Her
enthusiasm for Russian and her willingness to work hard, along with extensive knowledge, earn her many accolades as a Scholar Laureate.”
Usova also serves as a president of Russian Club, was president of Slavic National
Honor Society, and won the top heritage speaker award in Texas to be on the USA team in Moscow for the International Olympiada. Circumstances prevented Vicky from going to Moscow.
“Mrs. McLendon is an integral part of the Russian program at Bellaire, and I’m so glad that I’ve had the opportunity to benefit from her experience. I’m sure that my knowledge
will serve me well in the future,” said Usova.
