Bellaire High School senior Larricia Tuggle remembers times when she and her mother and sister lacked enough money to eat, when the money they did have was going to late fees or bills so they could have a place to stay or electricity. Sometimes, they would sit in the dark with candles because their lights had been turned off.
“All my life it’s just been me, my mother, and my sister, always struggling for a better life,” said Tuggle. “Ever since I was little, we have never been stable. My family always had to move because we didn’t have the money to pay rent or the bills. Money is the biggest struggle for us. Every time my mother would get a job something would always make her lose it and we would be back to square one again. I would start to lose hope. I would stay up all night wondering what I could do to help her, crying, and praying to God for him to make my life easier.”
Tuggle’s mother ended up earning an associate’s degree in business, and Tuggle is set to pursue a 4-year degree at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, majoring in economics and music.
“In the next four years I see myself graduating from Agnes Scott College and starting the job of my dreams, which is to own my own record company,” said Tuggle.
A representative from Agnes Scott came to Bellaire when Tuggle happened to be in the college center. Tuggle overheard the representative say that Agnes Scott was near Atlanta. The representative spoke about the school’s business program and a choir program and Tuggle decided to apply. The more she learned, the more she realized the college was what she wanted – all girls, small, no application fee, a choir program, a business program – and then came a scholarship and financial aid offer, which solidified her decision.
Tuggle hopes to go to graduate school and then get a good job and help her family. She says her goal is not to struggle any more.
