The city of Bellaire will dedicate its 9/11 Memorial at 2 p.m. today (Sunday, Sept. 11) on a site — appropriately — next to the Fire Department and across from the Police Department in the 5100 block of Jessamine Street. The event will also serve as a memorial on this, the 21st anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks.
The 11-foot section of I-beam from the World Trade Center was acquired five years ago and donated by the Rubinstein Family, who also donated the land for Evelyn’s Park on Bellaire Boulevard. It’s been in storage except for a period last year, the 20th anniversary, when it was loaned to the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston.
This installation is still considered temporary, with a possible relocation and establishment of a meditation area in Bellaire Town Square near the police station.
Mayor Andrew Friedberg recently blogged about the memorial on his city “musings.”
