Blistering Temperatures Continue, Heat Advisory Extended Through Thursday

August 5, 2010 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The heat advisory originally issued by the National Weather Service yesterday has been extended for the West U area through 7 p.m. this evening.
Heat indices are expected to again climb to well above 100 degrees across much of the area, reaching as high as 110 later this afternoon.
Forecasters warned those working or playing outdoors to use caution.
“If you plan to be outside, avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity. Your body can lose up to a gallon of water an hour through perspiration,” the National Weather Service said. “Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss in your body, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or stoke.”
Those venturing outdoors are encouraged to wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a hat to shield themselves from the sun. Use sunscreen to reduce the possibility of sunburn.
Temperatures are expected to reach the high-90s under partly cloudy skies.
