The City of West U. has cancelled the boil water notice, and CenterPoint Energy estimates that 65 percent of the city’s power has been restored following Hurricane Ike.
The city has begun non-storm debris solid waste collection, and asks all residents to place household garbage at the curb as soon as possible. Routine collection should begin tomorrow, Sept. 17.
Storm debris collection will follow. City staff are in the process of finalizing contracts to have the debris collected, and expects the total cost to be in the millions of dollars.
Residents are asked to place storm-debris on the public right-of-way – the area of a residential property that extends from the street to the sidewalk, ditch, utility pole or easement.
Keep vegetative debris (woody burnable debris such as limbs and shrubbery) separated from construction and demolition debris, as they will be collected separately. Bagged debris should not be placed on the public right-of-way; only loose debris will be collected. No debris should be placed in the street.
Any household hazardous waste, roof shingles or tires resulting from Hurricane Ike, may be eligible for removal and should be separated at the curb. Residents should not place debris near any water meter vault, fire hydrant or any other above-ground utility.
