Car burglaries have increased this year in West U., and police are asking resident to be proactive and observant as the holiday season approaches.
“We are about to get into the holiday season, and that is typically when we see thefts and burglaries increase,” said West U. Police Chief Ken Walker. “We also see people being followed home from shopping, and robbed in their driveways. Fortunately, we don’t have a lot of that here, but it does happen.”
Walker advises residents to stay aware of their surroundings. If someone believes they are being followed, Walker says they should drive directly to the police station.
From Jan. 1 to Oct. 14, 2007, there were 72 car burglaries in West U. For that same time period this year, there have been 86.
“I think unfortunately, the criminal element has learned that many of our residents have a habit of leaving their valuables in plain view in their vehicle, and that our residents typically leave high-value articles in their car,” said Walker.
“We have for some item been employing different patrol strategies to identify the suspects,” said Walker.
Walker advises residents to lock their cars, not leave valuables in sight and not leave garage doors open.
“We are safe here,” said Walker.” But, we don’t have a moat around the city, and our guys have caught some really bad criminals coming through town.”
