Celebrity Basketball Players Coach Charity Basketball Game Tonight

HISD’s Athletic Department is sponsoring a benefit basketball game to help raise money for the family of Tobi Oyedeji tonight at 7 p.m.

The seniors from Bellaire’s basketball team and the seniors from Yates basketball team will play an exhibition game to help raise money to help the family of Tobi Oyedeji pay for his funeral.

The celebrity coaches for the game are DeAndre Jordan, from Texas A&M and the LA Clippers, and Jordan Hill of the Rockets.

Jordan will be the coach for Bellaire and Hill will be the coach for Yates. The actual coaches of the teams are not allowed to coach their teams for the charity event because of UIL rules.

Tobi Oyedeji was a senior basketball player at Bellaire High School, who died in a car accident on Sunday.

He was on his way home from an after prom event when his silver Toyota Avalon crossed over the median into northbound traffic in the 14100 block of S. Main and crashed head-on into a green Jeep Patriot, killing Gertha Augestin, a nurse at MD Anderson, who was the driver of the other vehicle. He also struck a Honda civic, but the driver had minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.

Tobi Oyedeji was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was treated, but died from his injuries.

He would have been 18 years old this Friday.

The benefit basketball game will be held at Delmar Field House, 2020 Mangum.

Tickets are $5 at the door.
