More than 30,000 people ran through the rainy streets of West U on Sunday for the 29th annual Chevron Houston Marathon.
West U was the halfway point for the 26.2 mile course that started in front of Minute Maid Park and ended near the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Numerous spectators lined University Boulevards to cheer on the participants, shouting encouragement.
The winners of the Chevron Houston Marathon were Bekana Daba and Mamitu Daska.
Daba, 22, ran the race in 2 hours, 7 minutes and 4 seconds. He was awarded $35,000.
Daska, 27, ran the race in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 33 seconds. She was also awarded $35,000.
The first Houston Marathon took place in December 1972. The race brought out 113 runners for a five-mile loop course.
Today, the marathon is ranked among the world’s best marathons and has been named the “fastest winter marathon” and “second fastest marathon overall” by Ultimate Guide to Marathons.
Sunday’s race represented runners from all 50 U.S. states and more than 15 foreign countries.
West U has supported the marathon in previous years by allowing a portion of the race course to be staged within city limits. Council unanimously approved allowing the race to run through the city during a meeting in November.
