The City of West U. is attempting to reopen the Colonial Park building by Monday, but it is unknown if the West U. Recreation Center will be open any time soon.
The roof has been patched at the Colonial Park building, and the city hopes to complete plumbing work this weekend.
“We don’t have restroom facilities in operation yet,” said City Manager Michael Ross. “We hesitate to open it without restroom facilities.”
A contractor will assess the damage at the Rec. Center today, and give the city an estimate for repair to give to the insurance adjustor. The building suffered extensive water damage, and asbestos presents environmental hazard issues.
If cost for repair to the structure is more than the building is worth, the building could be declared “totaled” by the insurance adjustor, and the city will be provided with insurance funds for a replacement building of equal or lesser square footage.
“I don’t know if that will happen or not,” said Ross.
