West U residents can address city council with their opinions about approving a liquor license for Tiny Boxwood’s café during tonight’s public hearing at 6:30 p.m.
Landscape architecture firm Thompson + Hansen, who purchased the old JMH property at 3636 Rice Blvd. in March, is seeking an alcohol permit for a new Tiny Boxwood’s café. Council needs to approve the variance to serve alcohol because they are within 300 feet of West University Elementary.
During a meeting with West U residents on June 23, Gregg Thompson, co-owner of Thompson + Hansen and Tiny Boxwoods on West Alabama Street, said that he wants beer and wine to be part of the dining experience.
“This will never be a bar,” Thompson said during the June 23 meeting. “It’s just never going to happen.”

The JMH location will be Thompson’s second Tiny Boxwood’s café featuring a very simple menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Thompson said he plans on having a nursery component to the café with plants for sale, but no fresh cut flowers.
The café will also include a private dining area, wine and cheese on the patio and a special brunch on Sundays, Thompson said.
The public hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers, 3800 University Blvd.

Tiny boxwoods only wants “beer and wine to be part of the dining experience.” Thats what everyone says at first. Remember it only takes a few bad moves from the city council and being “friends” with high officials before beer and wine at dinner turn to bars and clubs turns to seedy areas. Lets learn from Guiliani, it takes years to reclaim bad establishments.
Lets be smart. Otherwise we maybe movin!
Think that the above statement is a little extreme. Do we really foresee a club operating from JMH??. I also doubt the majority of their liquor sales would be during school hours anyways (rather evenings and weekends) Edloe deli serves wine… They have for years without lapsing into a bar or club. Sorry to see you move over something as silly as a bunch of West U moms having mimosas with their Sunday brunch.
