Bellaire area Congressman John Culberson was among the many elected officials who reacted with condemnation following the attempted assassination of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday.
Giffords was shot in the head by 22-year-old Jared Loughner at one of the congresswoman’s “Congress on Your Corner” events at a Tucson supermarket Saturday morning.
Culberson said he was “grief stricken to hear the news of the attack.”
“My thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims of this senseless attack and their families, especially Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and Judge John Roll,” Culberson said. “Both are dedicated public servants who have devoted their lives to the people of Arizona.”
After shooting Giffords, Loughner began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office.
In all, Loughner killed six and wounded 13 before being tackled and subdued by bystanders.
Killed in the rampage were U.S. District John Roll, 64; congressional aide Gabe Zimmerman, 30; Christina Green, 9; Dorothy Morris, 76; Dorwin Stoddard, 76; and Phyllis Scheck, 79.
Roll, Zimmerman, Morris, Stoddard and Scheck were all dead at the scene. Green died after being transported to an araa hospital.
Despite being wounded in the head, doctors said Giffords was responding well to treatment and they were “optimistic” she would recover.
