DA Investigation on agenda for next city council meeting, water rates to increase

March 28, 2016 by Essentials Staff 2 Comments

The Harris County District Attorney’s investigation into the West U City Council — prompted by alleged Open Meetings violations surrounding the firing of former West U City Manager Michael Ross — reared its ugly head at Monday’s City Council meeting and as a result, the investigation will be discussed at the next City Council meeting.

Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson has been investigating some West University Place city council members for possible ethics law violations. The city council will consider reimbursing themselves for the cost of their criminal attorneys.
Councilmember Brennan Reilly spearheaded the conversation on the agenda item which deals with matters related to the investigation but also includes the possible reimbursement of councilmember’s criminal legal fees incurred during the investigation.
This is not the first time that Reilly has brought the investigation into focus again.
Earlier this year, Reilly sought reimbursement for legal fees incurred during the investigation but Councilmember Mardi Turner answered his request.
“We were told we were not going to be reimbursed,” Turner said at that meeting.
The investigation was on the agenda but as a future agenda items — a list of future short and long term items — and therefore was not on the immediate agenda.
Councilmember Bob Kelly and Reilly have claimed to have been “exonerated” but Marco Patino of the D.A.’s office told InstantNewsWestU.com that the status of that investigation is not something his office “could or would” comment on. Patino couldn’t confirm whether the investigation was completed.
Water Rates to Increase
The only agenda item on the docket was an ordinance to adopt a 0.50 percent increase in water rates effective May 1, 2016. The ordinance passed unanimously.
Customers who use an average of 12,000 gallons of water could see a $0.38 increase per month in their water and sewer bill.
The rate increase is a result of the City of Houston increasing its treated water rates towards West University Place.

No way are my taxes going towards the legal bills of any Council member who allegedly conducted city business outside of city time. That’s the whole point here!

Kelly and Reilly have claimed to have been “exonerated”. Please. At the very least they are sleazy for the way they acted. Kelly manipulates the weakest among us with fear and misinformation.
We should not pay their legal bills. Why did they need criminal attorneys? Maybe because they knew what they did was sleazy. Vet Sleazy. Let them eat the meal they made for themselves.
