Dance Source Announces Program For A Weekend Of Texas Contemporary Dance

A Weekend of Texas Contemporary Dance is scheduled for 8 p.m. Sept. 25 and Sept. 26 at Miller Outdoor Theatre, 100 Concert Dr. Presented by Dance Source, the evening program showcases a wide range of contemporary choreographic styles featuring solos, duets and large company pieces, set to both live and recorded music. The annual weekend includes a special family matinee, Dance Around the World, featuring Houston Ballet II and J&L New Arts Company at 11 a.m. Sept. 26.

Admission is free. All seating is available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Free tickets for the evening performances will be available at Miller Outdoor Theatre Box Office on the day of the show from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Listening devices for the hearing impaired are available at the Miller Theatre Box Office one hour prior to curtain.

Performances featured on the evening program include: American Repertory Ensemble of Austin performing Fray, created by Artistic Director David Justin for a cellist, dancer and video monitor; Amy Ell’s new work Thread, an aerial dance for Ell’s company Vault and Charmed Romantics, created this year for CORE Performance Company by Polly Motley.

Houston-based dancers Paola Georgudis and Lindsey McGill will perform in Dichotomy, a work by Spencer Gavin Hering, created for his new company, infinite movement ever evolving (iMEE). Freneticore will reprise their new urban dance-on-film Tetsujin. HIStory Dance Company, a Top 12 contender on MTV’s Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew in 2008, will present A Different Same Old Thing. Choreographer Jane Weiner presents a glimpse of her new evening length work, Village of Waltz, created for her company Hope Stone Dance.

Houston Metropolitan Dance Company will perform Stirring Simple Gifts in Shades of Blue, a lyrical work created for Houston Met by choreographer Caleb Mitchell, a former Houston Ballet company member. REDDance of Dallas/Fort Worth will present Habit is a Cable and Urban Souls Dance Company presents Across the Waters, which illustrates genocide in Africa.

The curatorial committee for A Weekend of Texas Contemporary Dance includes Dance Source Founder and President Christina Giannelli; Joanna Frieson, dance educator, former Houston Ballet Soloist Jeanne Doornbos Maher, and independent choreographer Leslie Skates.
