Dry, Warm & Windy Weather Prompts Fire Warning By National Weather Service

January 19, 2009 by snadmin Leave a Comment

Extremely dry air and expected wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour will
create “critical fire weather conditions” in Harris County and surrounding
counties.

As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a “Red Flag
Warning” from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, and a Fire Weather Watch
for Tuesday.

“The combination of dry fuels, very low humidity levels and gusty winds
will set the stage for the possibility of rapid fire growth today…and
warm termperatures will create explosive fire growth potential,” the
weather service said.

A Red Flag Warning “means that critical fire weather conditions are
either occurring now or will shortly,” the weather service said. “A Fire
Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast
to occur.”

The weather service said northwest winds are expected to increase to
15-25 miles per hour later Monday morning, as relative humidity drops
below 25 percent and on down as low as 10 percent by afternoon.

Several grass fires developed in southeast Texas under similar
conditions on Sunday, the weather service said.

While no official burn ban is in effect for Fort Bend County, residents
are cautioned against starting outdoor fires during the Red Flag
Warning, as they could quickly burn out of control under Monday and
Tuesday’s dry, warm and windy conditions.
