Voters in West University Place will begin going to the polls today (Monday, April 24) to select their mayor and City Council members for the next two years. Early voting will be conducted 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through Saturday and again next Monday-Tuesday, May 1-2, with polls open next Sunday from 12 noon to 7 p.m.
Election Day is Saturday, May 6.
The most convenient location for early voting is in the Council Chambers at West U City Hall, 3800 University Blvd., but residents can cast their ballots at any of 28 other locations scattered throughout Harris County, including one in downtown Houston at 1019 Congress Ave.
Running for the top job are incumbent Mayor Susan Sample and Councilmember John Barnes. Two incumbents are seeking to return to council — Shannon Carroll and John Montgomery — with Clay Brett, Matt Hart, Buckley Morlot rounding out the field. The top vote-getters in each race will win the seats.
Essentials’ coverage of the candidates’ backgrounds and reasons for running is available here, with the mayoral candidates addressing the issues here and council candidates here.
The city of West University has a dedicated elections page, which includes a sample ballot and a video showing how to use the newest Harris County voting machines. City Secretary Thelma Gilliam is also available to answer questions at tgilliam@westutx.gov or 713-662-5813.
