Event Raises Money For Microlending In Developing World

October 7, 2009 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The Center for International Studies at the University of St. Thomas tomorrow is hosting an event to raise money to support entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Jazz singer Kristine Mills will perform, and guests can bid on silent auction items like tickets to the theater, jewelry, restaurant gift certificates and more. The event, called Dum Spiro, means “while I breathe” in Latin and it’s open to the public. It supports the student-run MicroCredit Program.

“The same amount of money that many of us would spend on a typical Thursday night at a club, concert or movie could be used to help an entrepreneur in a developing nation,” according to a statement.

The contributions from the silent auction, raffle and other donations will help the MicroCredit Program’s microlending, including its four major projects: Kiva, The Mayan Project, The Pakistan Project and the Chilean Project. In the past two years, the annual fundraiser has brought in more than $20,000, allowing the Program to dispatch loans to more than 300 beneficiaries around the world.

Dum Spiro starts at 7 p.m. in the Scanlan Room, 4000 Mt. Vernon. For more information, contact Diana Garcia at 713-525-3530.
