Food finds: Gelato Rossa, family-style Greek, Austin wings, Randalls’ uncertain future

October 15, 2022 by Charlotte Aguilar

Italian favorite opening gelato shop

The proprietors of Enoteca Rossa, the cozy Italian eatery, patio and wine bar at 4566 Bissonnet St., are taking over the old Pdry cleaning business next door at 4564 and plan to open Gelato Rossa early next year. A source at the restaurant described the new venture as “the Baskin-Robbins of gelato,” with a wide selection of flavors, fresh ingredients, and ways to eat the Italian treat.

Kriti Kitchen

Greek kitchen coming to Weslayan Plaza

Private chef and caterer Mary Cuclis, who made her local reputation in a two-Michelin-star Hong Kong Chinese restaurant and at the popular Houston Indian eatery Pondicheri is returning to her roots. She’s preparing to open Kriti Kitchen, named for the Greek word for Crete and featuring the cuisine of her family. The brunch-lunch-dinner spot will be located at 4010 Bissonnet St. (former site of ZPizza and Daily Juice). Central to the menu is a family-style presentation of mezze boards for group dining with various selections of homestyle Greek specialties grouped together. Similar meals will also be packaged to-go on a “heat and eat” menu for couples or families.

More fast casual news…

Pluckers Wing Bar, a popular Austin-based chain, will build a new restaurant on a pad site across the West Loop from Meyerland Plaza, in a booming strip where Academy Sports & Outdoors is locating. And the owner of the Meyerland Plaza Chick-Fil-A  — known for its gridlock-producing lines at the intersection of Beechnut and Endicott — is opening a location nearby in Meyer Park at 9799 S. Post Oak Road, hoping to alleviate capture the overflow.

Watching the takeover…

Kroger has made an agreement to buy Albertson’s markets for $24.6 billion, which would bring its nationwide supermarket total to more than 5,000. Locally, that puts the future of Randalls markets — which still has two stores in the West U-Bellaire area, in Vanderbilt Square and Weslayan Plaza — into play. Kroger has been gobbling up local grocery chains around the U.S., and this sale will reportedly  scrutinized closely for potential federal anti-trust violations.
