The Southwest Football League (SFL) experienced an equipment shortage this summer when League officials were scrambling to get enough gear for every player to play. While they eventually were able to get enough helmets and shoulder pads and knee pads and other essentials for the players to wear, SFL officials are still putting out the call for anyone who might have some old or unused football equipment lying around to donate it to the league.
If necessary, the league will then send that equipment out to be reconditioned and restored so it can be used again in games. Reconditioning is basically the inspection, cleaning, sanitizing, repair, and/or restoration of any equipment to its original performance standard.
Youth football officials across the country recommend that all helmets be reconditioned after a season for not only the look and the feel of the equipment, but also to help extend the lifespan of gear.
Anyone who might have any equipment that they feel can be donated to the Southwest Football League, can contact them through their website at sfltx.org or simply go to the South Campus where they play and reach out to a league official to let them know what you have…

The St. John’s School football team got off to its best start in years, winning their first three games of the season, with the start of Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) play having started the first night of this month.
The Mavericks, led by third-year head coach Kevin Veltri, looked nearly unstoppable offensively early on, rolling up 111 points in those victories for an average of 37 points per game. They beat former SPC rival John Cooper, 35-21, to begin the year and then went to Dallas and hammered SPC North colleague Greenhill, 42-0 before taking a thrilling 34-33 win over Fort Bend Christian Academy to stand 3-0 before their final non-district game against The Village School to end last month.
In the conquest of FBCA, the Eagles had a chance to win the game in the final minute on a two-point conversion but senior defensive end Michael Skaribas disrupted the play and then made the game-winning tackle to preserve the victory.
In the win over Cooper, senior quarterback John Perdue rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns and senior running back Mike Masterson had another 117 yards on the ground and a touchdown while freshman Cole Allen contributed a 65-yard punt return for a score. Cade McMillan led the defense with 10 tackles in the game.
Against Greenhill, Perdue ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore quarterback Stephen Gill threw for 60 yards and two scores. Allen returned another punt for a long touchdown, and junior tight end Pierce Leverett had 79 yards receiving and one touchdown. Junior cornerback Jack McGarry paced the defense’s sparkling shutout effort with six tackles, and junior defensive back Robert Riser had an interception.
Against Fort Bend Christian, Perdue had an unbelievable night, throwing for 198 yards on 16-of-21 passing while rushing for another 123 yards and a touchdown. Allen finished with 181 all-purpose yards, running for 96 with 85 more receiving and three touchdowns. McGarry again led the defense, making 10 tackles while Skaribas had four sacks…

Former St. John’s School star Quarterback Wesley Gow of West U is currently a backup signal-caller at the University of Chicago, and Maroons were off to a terrific 3-0 start this year. Gow, who was the last of three brothers to play quarterback for the Mavericks, played in two games at UC as a freshman in 2019, but did not play last fall as the Maroons were unable to suit up for a game due to COVID. He played in two of Chicago’s first three games this year and ripped off a 45-yard run against Beloit in a 66-0 win. The Maroon-and-white began the year with a 31-21 win over Washington University of St. Louis and then clobbered Illinois College, 66-14, giving them 163 points in their first three games. Gow, who was a dual threat at St John’s with his running and his throwing, has proven to be a most effective runner at the college level, carrying the ball 10 times for 85 yards in his first two games this year…

The Texas A&M football team is looking for its first-ever appearance in the National College football playoffs and if the Aggies are successful enough to make it this year, it appears Bellaire HS graduate Jayden Peevy will play a big role after the current A&M senior was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his career performance in the Aggies hard-fought 10-7 win over Colorado last month in Boulder. Peevy, who is now a two-year starter under third-year head coach Jimbo Fisher, had a career-high seven tackles and his first-ever college interception in that game as the Aggies defense kept it close after their starting quarterback went out early with an injury.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound defensive tackle went into this season having appeared in the first 47 games he has suited up for the maroon-and-white. He started three times his junior year in 2019 but started all 10 of the Aggies games in their shortened 2020 season and is now a stalwart in the defensive line for a team hoping to make his first run at a national championship since the NCAA playoff system began back in 2015. Peevy showed in the Aggies season-opening win over Kent State that he might be getting an interception very soon, breaking up two passes in that game. And for just a second, it looked like he had a chance to get an interception on either one or both of them…

Linebacker Rodney Dansby, who has been Bellaire’s best defensive player the last couple of years, is currently a freshman for the Houston Baptist University football team and he has made an immediate impression for the Huskies. In his first college game last month at New Mexico, a 27-17 loss, he was in on one tackle, but the next week, back at home against Northern Colorado, a 45-13 defeat, Dansby was involved in nine tackles, including two solos.
Despite the obvious talent, the 5-foot-11, 225-pounder kind of flew under the radar in high school. As a senior, he made 60 solo tackles in seven games and was named to the Houston Touchdown Club Preseason All-Greater Houston team. And as a junior at Bellai, Dansby was the District 18-6A Defensive MVP, recording an amazing 161 solo tackles in 11 games for a team with a losing record. The three-year starter at Bellaire also had 113 tackles as a sophomore when he was a rookie to the varsity, meaning he finished his Cardinal career with over 300 tackles. HBU is a member of the Southland Conference and the Huskies were scheduled to begin their Southland Conference schedule Saturday, Oct. 2, with a trip to Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. …

Strake Jesuit Preparatory College HS graduate Michael Jewett is currently in his junior year with the Trinity University football team in San Antonio. Jewett had a breakout season in 2019 at linebacker, leading the team in tackles as a sophomore with 86 total tackles in 10 games, including 34 solos. But the Tigers didn’t play last fall due to COVID, and their 2020 regular season wound up being four games earlier this year in February and March. Jewett played in three of those games, making 16 total tackles, including eight solo. The 6-foot, 225-pounder also played in both of his team’s wins — a 37-7 win over Millsaps College on Feb. 13 and a 38-15 victory over Birmingham-Southern on March 13.
