My Plates, a private company that creates personalized license plates under the authority of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicle, has begun the sale of special seven-character license plates.
The seven-character plates began selling today and will be available for a week only.
The new seven-character plate category is called “Freedom.” The plates were so named because the seven letter or number combination gives residents greater freedom to spell out a personalized message.
Since 1965, Texans have had only six characters or fewer available for personalization on Texas plates.
The seven-character Freedom plates are available on 20 background designs offered by My Plates. The plates are priced at:
- 1 year $395.00
- 5 year $695.00 ($139.00 a year)
- 10 year $795.00 ($79.50 a year)
The cost of the personalized plates can be paid on a “layaway” option.
Additionally, those wanting more time to decide on their seven-letter personalized message can purchase a gift card during the week-long sale and obtain the actual plate at a later time.
Motorists who sell their vehicle can put the specialized plates on any vehicle registered in their name. If they change cars during the life of the plate, the tag can be transferred to a new vehicle.
Plates can be ordered online at www.myplates.com and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Availability of a message can also be checked on the company’s website. All plate messages are subject to approval by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
According to the company, more than 7,000 Texas motorists have already registered their interest in seven-character plates.
Texans have bought more than 38,000 My Plates since the company entered into an agreement with the state in November 2009. Those purchases have reportedly put more than $3.1 million in the state’s general revenue fund.
