Back-to-back knee injuries at the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp have translated into a National Football League opportunity for a former Bellaire High School wide receiver.
Rob Myers, a 23-year-old rookie tight end from Utah State, was quickly signed by the Eagles after their fifth-round draft pick, tight end Cornelius Ingram, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his knee last week.
A Bellaire native, Myers lettered at Bellaire High School for three years as wide receiver. He’s wearing number 85 for the Eagles, and began practicing with the team this week.
Ingram’s knee injury was the second in less than a week. On Saturday, wide receiver DeSean Jackson hyper-extended his knee, although he is expected to return to practice quickly.
That may not happen with Ingram, who had an ACL injury to the same knee in his senior year at Florida.
As for Myers, he was available after being signed by the Jets as a free agent, but later released.
Six feet tall and weighing 242 pounds, Myers became starting tight end at Utah State as a sophomore. As a junior he averaged 15.2 yards per catch, the best average among college tight ends. However, he missed his whole senior year with a turf-toe injury and resulting surgery.
