Future UST Freshman A Presidential Scholar

The University of St. Thomas will welcome presidential scholarship winner Maria Franco-Fuenmayor in the fall, an 18-year-old Venezuelan native who just graduated with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree from Houston Community College-Southwest.
“It was ironic, I graduated with the black robe before my blue high school robe,” said Franco-Fuenmayor.
Franco-Fuenmayor and her family arrived in the United States when she was three years old. Her older brother went on to become an engineer and her sister a teacher. “My parents were always very supportive,” she said. “It’s been hard,” she says about taking college courses at the same time as high school, “but you just have to keep your priorities straight.”
She plans to do her undergraduate work at UST then transfer to the Baylor College of Medicine, where she hopes to become a Pediatrician.
