Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died serving our nation.
General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, proclaimed May 30 as Memorial Day in 1868. Flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery, according to www.usmemorialday.org.
New York was the first state to officially recognize the holiday in 1873. Southern states recognized the holiday after World War I, when Memorial Day recognized all Americans who died fighting any war, according to the website.
