Heat Advisory For Monday, Heat Index To Reach 105-110 Range

August 16, 2010 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service has been extended through 8 p.m. tonight.
The high in West U today is expected to reach 97, with a 40 percent chance of rain.
Blistering temperatures combined with continued high humidity will send the heat index into the
105-110 range, with the highest readings during the afternoon and early evening hours.
The weather service reminded those outside during the heat of the day to take precautions.
“If you plan to be outside, avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity. Your body can lose up to a gallon of water an hour through perspiration,” forecasters said.
Those outdoors should drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss in the body, which, in turn, can increase the risk of heat exhaustion or stroke.
People outside should wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a hat.
The weather service also reminded residents to not leave children or pets in cars.
“Heat kills. Children and pets should never left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes,” the weather service said.
