The West U area will continue to swelter today, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory through 9 p.m. tonight.
Heat indices are expected to climb to well above 100 degrees across much of the area, reaching the 105-109 range this afternoon.
Forecasters warned those working or playing outdoors to take precautions.
“If you plan to be outside, avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity. Your body can lose up to a gallon of water an hour through perspiration,” the National Weather Service said. “Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss in your body, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or stoke.”
Those venturing outdoors are encouraged to wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a hat to shield themselves from the sun. Use sunscreen to reduce the possibility of sunburn.
The afternoon high is expected to reach the mid- to high-90s under partly cloudy skies.
There is only a 10 percent chance of a stray shower hitting the area.
Today’s UV index will be in the “extreme” range.
