Parents and community members are invited learn more about the Houston Independent School District by attending the first in a series of Learning Labs on Nov. 19, from 5-7 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 West 18th.
Topics will include the district’s goals, beliefs, and visions; the organization of the district and the Board of Education; how HISD is funded major initiatives such as ASPIRE, Creating a College-Bound Culture, and Focus on Literacy; successes and accomplishments of HISD and discussion on how parents and the community can get involved.
There will also be opportunities for discussion about current issues and challenges in public education. Space is limited. those interesting in attending should call 713-556-7200 to reserve a seat.
HISD will hold a Parent Involvement Day Celebration on Nov. 20, from 10 a.m.-noon at the Northwest Mall, 9600 Hempstead. The mall is directly across the street from the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center.
The district will recognize parents for their commitment and support of HISD and will provide information on HISD programs including the data system used to evaluate the strengths of students and intervene early to deal with areas of weakness, magnet programs, character education, multilingual programs, safe and drug free schools, college access, college financial aid and psychological services.
HISD partners will also be present to provide information on CHIPS (Children’s Health Insurance Program), Project GRAD, the Girl Scouts and the Houston Public Library.
