The Houston Independent School District has loaned 20 school buses to the Galveston Independent School District, after GISD lost operational capacity in 46 out of their 50 school buses due to Hurricane Ike.
It is not known how long Galveston will use the buses, and there is a possibility the district may purchase them from HISD eventually. Galveston initially asked HISD for 46 buses. HISD currently has just fewer than 1,000 buses in their fleet. New buses were purchased last year to replace older buses, and were delivered over the summer. Galveston will borrow buses from the older fleet that have not yet been sold by HISD.
“HISD can loan Galveston buses for as long as they need them, and we may sell a portion of them to Galveston in the future,” said Lisa Kinney, HISD’s media coordinator.
