The Houston Independent School District board will vote Thursday on a plan to allow students who live outside the boundaries of HISD to attend classes at HISD schools for free, eliminating out-of-district tuition.
More than 50 out-of-district students currently pay $5,000-$7,000 for tuition enrollment in a HISD schools, including magnet programs. HISD charged out-of-district enrollment because the state would not provide funding for students who live outside the attendance zones. But in recent years, the state has begun providing funding to reimburse school districts for the cost of educating out-of-district students.
“I am extremely excited that we can offer students in the greater Houston area the opportunity to take advantage of the great educational choices available in HISD,” said HISD’s North Region Superintendent Cynthia Wilson. “I believe this is a win for us and children who want to explore the different academic programs available across the district.”
For acceptance to the school, principals will consider space availability, and the student’s disciplinary history and attendance records. Currently, HISD receives state funding of $5,094 to pay the cost of educating each student.
Transportation will not be provided for students who reside outside the district’s attendance zones, under the proposal.
