San Diego school superintendent Dr. Terry Grier was picked as new Houston Independent School District superintendent Thursday by the board of trustees.
Grier will succeed HISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra, who is retiring August 31.
Although the choice was unanimously approved by the HISD board, state law requires a 21-day waiting period for public comment before Grier can take the district’s top job.
Grier, 59. has served as superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District, which has 135,000 students, since March 2008. He holds a doctorate of education from Vanderbilt University, and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Carolina University.
Melinda Garret, HISD chief financial officer, will serve as interim superintendent.
