HISD Qualifies For Filters, Installation Grant Under Clean Buses For Kids Program

The Houston Independent School District board will vote on acceptance of 14 diesel particulate filters and a grant of $6,776 for installation at its regular meeting at 5 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th St. The filters are valued at $91,266. HISD has qualified to receive the filters and the funding to install them under the Federal Clean Buses for Kids Grant Program.
The filters and grant come on the heals of a $249,410 grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, awarded under the Texas Clean School Bus Grant Program, which covered the equipping of 49 school buses with partial flow through filter systems, approved by the board in October. The systems will help to reduce particulate matter emitted from school buses.
The district has been running ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in school buses and all its other diesel vehicles since November 2003. HISD switched to this cleaner fuel and cleaner burning engines that reduce nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter emissions. The district also established a no idle policy for its vehicles
