As the Houston ISD board of trustees gets serious about finding a superintendent through a nationwide search, it has scheduled a series of community meetings throughout the district and posted an online survey to get the public’s feedback on the traits the next leader should have.
District V Trustee Sue Deigaard will host a session at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday (Jan. 15) at Pershing MS, 3838 Blue Bonnet Blvd., and co-host another at 2 p.m. next Wednesday with two other trustees at Long Academy, 6501 Bellaire Blvd.
A districtwide meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Jan. 19 at district headquarters, 4400 W. 18th St.
The online survey is available on the HISD website.
All district stakeholders — taxpayers, parents, students, HISD employees, business and community members — are encouraged to weigh in. The board will use feedback to create a profile to use in screening candidates.
The executive search firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates — which identified the last superintendent, Richard Carranza, as a candidate — is conducting this search at no cost, since Carranza stayed on the job only 18 months before leaving to take over the leadership of the New York City school system. Grenita Lathan has been serving as interim superintendent and is a candidate for the position.
