HISD To Host Magnet Awareness Week, Featuring More Than 100 Schools

HISD is hosting its annual “Magnet Awareness Week,” beginning Saturday, Nov. 6 until Friday, Nov.12.
HISD’s Magnet Open House will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 440 West 18^th St.
More than 100 HISD schools with magnet programs will have informational booths at the event. Parents and students will also be able to obtain information regarding the magnet application process.
Tours of individual schools with magnet programs will take place from Monday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Nov. 12. Tours will be conducted each day starting at 1 p.m. After Nov. 12, parents should phone individual schools for a schedule of tours and other events that will be conducted through early January.
“I encourage all parents to come to the Magnet Open House on Saturday and then tour as many magnet schools that they and their child might be interested in,” said Lupita Hinojosa, HISD Assistant Superintendent of School Choice. “HISD has 113 schools with magnet programs and there is no limit to the number of programs students can apply to. I am certain the HISD Magnet programs can meet your child’s interests, talents, and academic needs.”
HISD will begin accepting applications for its magnet programs on Nov. 8. All applications must be postmarked no later than Jan. 7, 2011 for guaranteed consideration in the first round.
