Hoogendam Picks Up Packet For West U. Council Election

February 27, 2009 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

Brian Hoogendam has picked up a packet to file for West U.’s May 9 election. All council positions, including mayor, are up for reelection. All current council members are eligible for reelection other than Phyllis Cohen.

Councilmen Bob Fry, Chuck Guffey and Mayor Bob Kelly have all filed to run again. Edloe Street Deli owner George Boehme contemplated a run for the top spot, but filed instead for a council position. Steven Segal has also filed to run for a council seat and Sunny Brandtner and Phillip Bryant have also picked up packets, but not filed.

Current West U. Councilman Michael Talianchich says there are three options on the table – he runs for a second term on council, he runs for mayor, or he doesn’t run at all. He says his first term on council was difficult due to his disagreements with the rest of council, and to run he would need to find a “like-minded” candidate to run with him.

Talianchich has historically butted heads with the rest of council, mainly concerning financial issues. Talianchich consistently asked for a much cheaper alternative to the $13.8 million parks bond. A less costly alternative was not put on the ballot, and the $13.8 million bond passed in November.

The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on March 9. Applications and accompanying documents may be obtained from the city secretary’s office in the Municipal Building, 3800 University Blvd.

The General Election will be held on May 9. Voters will vote for mayor and four council members to serve a two-year term of office. Each position is at-large.

April 9 is the last day for submitting voter registration applications in time to vote in this election or for requesting transfer of registration in time to vote in a new precinct.
