Fresco Café Italiano, 3277 Southwest Freeway, closed on May 1, with a scrawled sign in its window and a message on social media. CultureMap Houston reported that the chef, Roberto Crescini, was returning to his native country of Italy for a “sabbatical.”
The tiny eatery was a surprise success with bare bones décor, BYOB, and a simple menu that included an array of handmade pastas paired with a diner’s choice of fresh sauces, along with celebrated entrees such as lamb tagliatelle, osso buco and wild boar with rigatoni.
The restaurant’s reputation and clientele exploded last year when it was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy Fieri.
