Bellaire HS senior Sonya Kulkarni has achieved something no Houston ISD student has in more than 40 years: She’s been named as one of two Texas delegates to the U.S. Senate Youth Program, and is headed for a week-long visit with government leaders in Washington, D.C. next month at the 61st annual session.
The program — administered in Texas by the Texas Education Agency — is under the auspices of the U.S. Senate and includes a $10,000 college scholarship from the Hearst Foundation for each participant. As part of the D.C. trip, Kulkarni will get to visit the White House, Congress, Supreme Court and Pentagon and attend briefings by key government figures.
At Bellaire, Kulkarni is executive editor-in-chief of the Three Penny Press, the student newspaper. She has written for Ms.com, is on the advisory team of the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs, and is a national youth ambassador for the American Cancer Society.
