West University’s election became a contest Thursday when Mayor Susan Sample drew an opponent for re-election on May 6 — two-term Councilman John Barnes.
Sample was the first to get her paperwork in when the filing period for mayor and all four council seats opened two weeks ago, with Councilmember John Montgomery, who has been serving as Mayor Pro Tem, and newcomer Clay Brett filing for council soon after. Brett is a former alternate on the Zoning Board of Adjustment and is a principal and partner at Millennial Energy.
West U still doesn’t have a full complement of office-seekers for the five seats up for grabs, though, with just a week left in the filing period. Incumbent Councilmembers Melanie Bell and Shannon Carroll, who have each served a single term, have not yet filed and have not responded to Essentials’ query about their intentions.
Filing will close at 5 p.m. Feb. 17, with drawing for ballot placement at City Hall at 5 p.m. Feb. 23.
Early voting will run from April 24 through May 2, with Election Day on Saturday, May 6.
