Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo has ordered businesses in Harris County to require employees and customers 10 and older to wear face masks or face fines up to $1,000 for each violation beginning Monday and lasting through June 30.
She likened the requirement to a common practice and sign: “No shoes, no shirts, no service” — adding “no mask” to that list.
Gov. Greg Abbott has prohibited mandates against individuals, but surprised many Thursday when he gave the go-ahead to Bexar County to require businesses to enforce mask-wearing.
Hidalgo’s news conference Friday afternoon, which also featured medical, business and other government leaders, outlined the new requirement. It came with the news that nearly 1,200 additional COVID-19 cases were diagnosed in Harris County on Thursday.
